While I'm not sure I have the desire or time to try and fire that effort back up, I did recently land one of my "white whales" or "grails" if you will - 1999 Skybox Thunder Super Rave. These parallels were numbered to just 25 copies. A copper foil replaced the normal ink used for the players name on the card front, along w/ the Thunder logo. These elusive parallels were exclusive to Hobby packs and while I don't recall the actual pack odds, they weren't easy to pull. I'm also not sure if Thunder sold very well so who knows if the other 24 copies of this card are floating around out there on the secondary market. My guess is no, making acquiring this card that much tougher and now that much more sweeter.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicrCkXwZ9vtmUGQ6kaX_i38VoCaGFLxh_fsJ71hYA2Sk-y5le12l-7erh2_1OF61g4FlG2C30NVJEYA3bcmfthrYNSosBLnQksgi3tEBRRhHRhgbzlG4erj76xg2_1w4ZjU0XR0RC3IJu-wy9H3cNPRBCbKAIBla6Dp78d-nf9bamonqIOJfZPEie7vUm5/s1051/Super%20Rave%2004-25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1051" data-original-width="743" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicrCkXwZ9vtmUGQ6kaX_i38VoCaGFLxh_fsJ71hYA2Sk-y5le12l-7erh2_1OF61g4FlG2C30NVJEYA3bcmfthrYNSosBLnQksgi3tEBRRhHRhgbzlG4erj76xg2_1w4ZjU0XR0RC3IJu-wy9H3cNPRBCbKAIBla6Dp78d-nf9bamonqIOJfZPEie7vUm5/s320/Super%20Rave%2004-25.jpg" width="226" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF60O_xljv7ROXnVWE0vWlYCicOFMabgsyISDaAZvS3ThDFEw756JrcTvjAasIxCzb53R2-LLx2rHsSSshblhuV9woHOrQm-5-DntjLLYKtGTlXHwiuCw4C9-oeNhUMvdh_B9kWGZwFPhcU-iBwBI6hGzXfXLhfqDA_wxW7enEIUpUp9hLcPSms3ZAdu2y/s1051/Super%20Rave.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1051" data-original-width="744" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF60O_xljv7ROXnVWE0vWlYCicOFMabgsyISDaAZvS3ThDFEw756JrcTvjAasIxCzb53R2-LLx2rHsSSshblhuV9woHOrQm-5-DntjLLYKtGTlXHwiuCw4C9-oeNhUMvdh_B9kWGZwFPhcU-iBwBI6hGzXfXLhfqDA_wxW7enEIUpUp9hLcPSms3ZAdu2y/s320/Super%20Rave.jpg" width="227" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">These card images are also forever immortalized on Trading Card Database's <a href="https://www.tcdb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid/1332/1999-SkyBox-Thunder" target="_blank">site</a>, you're welcome. This is one of those cards I had almost given up hope of ever finding, but thanks to a eBay saved search I got the email a few weeks back. I looked over the listing (which also contained the Rave parallel that I already owned) and decided I'd make a run at it. I didn't have much money to play around with, but I placed my bid. This is where it got "exciting". I meant to bid $36.16, but I forgot the decimal...so I became the high bidder with a max bid if $3,616! Whoops! I immediately researched out to retract a bid and was told I needed to reach out to the seller, which I did only for them to do nothing. In their defense the auction was under the 2 hour mark of ending so I'm not sure they could have done anything. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">We've all placed a bid before for an item we wanted really bad, constantly refreshing the page in those fleeting moments of the auction's final moments. Sometimes I'm hoping to get outbid as I had remorse of placing the bid in the first place, but this time the anxiety was for a whole 'nother reason. I was literally praying that no one would come along and run up the bid "just because". I had already told the bidder they would have to help if that was the case, but I don't know what their stance would have been if that was the case. Thankfully, no one else came in behind me and placed another bid so I ended up winning the two card lot for like $20 and some change. Whew!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Even though I have this in my hand now, I'm still in a state of disbelief. Most of the cards I'm still searching are low numbered parallels or 1/1 cards. It's rare that I'm able to add anything new of his to the collection, but when those far and few in between days happen they are some of the best days.</div>flywheelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404740580161509052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1329010551878629246.post-13098571360501038442018-01-25T10:29:00.001-08:002018-01-25T10:29:57.550-08:001996 Pinnacle Select Certified<br />

Pinnacle's Select Certified was the epitimy of high end baseball cards in the mid-90's. Exclusive to hobby shops the summer of '96, this was one of the first sets that had multiple levels of parallels. Blue (1:50), Red (1:5), Artist's Proofs (1:18), Mirror Blue (1:200), Mirror Gold (1:300) and Mirror Red (1:100) gave collectors like myself a challenge if we wanted to "chase the rainbow.</div>

The Mirror parallels back in the day were very hard to come across and if you pulled a star player, you could easily flip it for big bucks. Think of the Mirror parallels as Pinnacle's Refractors in a sense. Notice on the back these cards are labels Mirror Blue/Gold/Red just above the "autenticator" logo Pinnacle Brands used for awhile.</div>

This was the only insert in the set and it matched up similar players from both leagues. This may be one of the first cards I remember seeing Ordonez and Jeter paired up together. Certainly not the last card however as the two of them would be paired on numerous cards over the next handful of years. By the way, the scan doesn't do this card justice as the front is covered in a silver holofoil.</div>

Select was a new higher end version of cards for Pinnacle in 1996. Back when they were new they were exciting, now they just seem to get lost in the shuffle of mid 90's cards. I don't really care for hte wood grain on the front of the card. The back is equally boring.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Aficionado was a one hit wonder for Pinnacle in the mid-1990's. Well, I'm not sure it was exactly a hit. The base set featured all horizontal photos with a image of the player on the left side. This was done with a silver holofoil with raised black detail. I actually like the design and I was sad to see that it didn't return in 1997. The back of the card featured the previous year's stats on a clean, black background. There is a large black & white photo of the players face on the left side. I will note that these are finger print magnets.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a subset included called Global Reach. The idea of this set is pretty straight forward, especially when you flip the card over to the back. The front has that same silver holofoil background and raised black detail, this time in the shape of the globe. The back is much more colorful and gives you a little info about the player and the country they are from. In Rey's case, Cuba. I love how they took a baseball and turned it into Earth, especially with the red stitches still intact.</div>

Like with many card sets in the 1990's, a parallel set of the base cards existed. In this case it was the Pinnacle brand Artist's Proofs. The only difference is a small gold logo on the card's front. It seemed more and more card were going the more "premium route" in the mid-90's and Pinnacle was no exception. I didn't particularly care for the over design of the 1996 set, however I can appreciate an almost full bleed photo. Like most cards of Rey, this one captures him in the field in what appears to him getting ready to snag a ground ball.</div>

<i>Foil #380</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I believe the entire set was also released with foil fronts. The card looks a little better in person than the scan, however these are magnet for fingerprints. Not the most engaging parallel, but whatever.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Speaking of parallels, the Starburst parallels use Pinnacle Brand's Dufex technology. They look fantastic in person and I'd love to pick up the Starburst parallel for my collection, however I've never ever seen one for sale. The comes I have seen recently for sale on eBay or even at COMC have been priced much higher than I would've expected. I also still need the Starburst Artist's Proof parallel to complete the 1996 Pinnacle collection.</div>

I remember when this set was released it had everyone going bonkers over it. Boxes and packs were selling at what seemed to be crazy high prices...all because you were guaranteed one certified autograph <i>per pack</i>. In addition to the autograph cards were base cards, such as the one above. Very basic design, bordering on bland for my tastes. I believe there were 150 base cards in the first series.</div>

Rey was featured in the first series of autographs. The Bronze auto was the base auto, with gold and silver parallels. While the cards aren't serially numbered, the reported print run was 3,500 for bronze, 1,000 for silver and 500 for gold. It took me awhile to locate the silver paralle and even longer to find the gold parallel.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The 1996 Preferred set is probably most remembered by it's insert set of cards made out of steel. It's a side set that I'm still actively working on completing, however this card of Rey is from the base set. It's got a decent design. Like how they have an image of him fielding the ball on the front and him batting on the back. Rey never was known for his offensive skills so I'd much rather have a defensive image on the card's front.</div>

One parallel set existed, Press Proofs. The silver foil is replaced with gold foil. The Press Proof parallel name would pop up in later Leaf and Donruss sets.</div>

While Rey didn't make it into the base set of 1996 Leaf Limited, he was included in their Limited Rookies insert set. The card came in two versions, silver and gold. This was another parallel that originally escaped my knowledge of it's existence.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ultra started out as a set boasting multiple pictures of the player, then went on to introduce UV coating and gold foil stamping. Finally in 1996 it lost some of the gaudy "look at me" design in favor for a borderless look with full bleed photos and toned back the goil foil. I personally like the design, though Fleer also used this design for their minor league set, Excel.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
The Gold Medallion parallels just didn't do much for me in 1996 or even today. There is just a thing as too much foil and this is a prime example. Like others, these cards are notorious for showing finger prints so beware when handling. I should also mention that the player image is embossed similar to the Circa Boss inserts from the same year.</div>

While I love lenticular cards, they just don't scan well. This insert set would continue to improve it's look over the years to come, but this is where the set got it's start.</div>

<i>1996 Fleer Circa #161</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Fleer introduced Circa as a new set in 1996 and it was seemingly welcomed by collectors as it went on to last a few years before it was retired. Although I find the card fronts to be a little busy, I seem to remember buying a lot of this product. It seemed as if this was the first year that Rey was being compared against other notable short stops. This card's back mentions him as the successor to Ozzie Smith, the "Wizard" himself!</div>

<i>Access #24</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Access insert was one of the first folding baseball cards that I can remember. I'd previously seen this done with basketball cards (Collect-A-Books), but not in baseball. The card opens up like a trifold wallet, with the middle picture above being the first image you see when you open up the card. Interesting concept with some cool trivia info inside.</div>

<i>1996 Fleer Update #U160</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1996 Fleer was a nice change of pace for baseball cards. Gone was the slick UV coating on the cards and in its place was a matte finish. The cards still included gold foil stamping for the logo as well as the player's name, team and position. The matte finish made these cards perfect for autographs and while I never was able to get any autographed, this set still holds up as one of my favorites.</div>

The Smooth Leather insert features a rather plain look, but Rey makes for a good inclusion in a set based on fielding skill.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When the Studio brand first launched in the early 90's the cards contained black and white portraits of the players. There posed images, almost like a family photo versus the traditional action photos. The brand would eventually change over the next few years as you can see with this 1996 card. For starters I like the full bleed photo and I like how the design retains that portrait like image. The back of the card cleverly uses the O in Studio for the obligatory head shot of the player. While the back lacks stats, at least there is a little bio write up of the player.</div>

As with most of the card releases in the 90's, Studio also has it's fair share of parallels. The parallel set was called Press Proofs. This is the gold parallel, limited to just 500 copies. This was before serial numbering caught on so while limited, it's not numbered. </div>

There is also a Bronze and Silver Press Proof parallel that I currently lack...or is it sitting in my pile at Check Out My Cards?</div>

I don't know much about the Score Board's history as a trading card company, but this unlicensed set hit on the heals of Classic's 5 Sport set in the mid-90's. The base cards don't feature any UV coating or foil stamping, which was a nice change at the time. However this set never appealed to me that much so I only picked up singles of Ordonez and a few other Hall of Fame players and moved on.</div>

If this card looks familiar it should. It's basically identical to the Preview card that was randomly packaged in 1996 Bowman, with the exception of a new card number on the back. Never was a fan of Bowman's Best and this year's design sure didn't help. There is just way too much "border" on these cards and not enough of the background photo for my taste.</div>

By the time the 1996 edition of Bowman had come around I was starting to really get familiar with the rookie loaded checklists and buying my fair share of packs. While I like full bleed photography sets, I'm OK with a bordered design if it's done well. While I personally don't care for the '96 design now as much as I did when it was new, I still find the design to be OK. The red foil stamped Bowman logo looks out of place to me, but what do I know. It's another early card of Rey and it features a decent photo of him at the plate in what appears to be him in the process of getting a hit (or at least making contact).</div>

The only thing the mid to late 90's brought upon the baseball card market was parallels. At first the trend started off innocently enough with one parallel per set, such as this foil card. Then as the years passed more and more parallels were introduced. Not surprisingly most of the cards of his I still lack are parallels.</div>

Ordonez's second rookie card, I always get a kick out of multi-player cards such as this as you can look back at the other players on the card and usually say "what ever happened to him?" I believe Ray Holbert went on to play for the Cardinals (?) and I know Kevin Orie hung around in the Cubs organization for awhile, but overall I don't believe any of these 3 guys lasted as long in the majors as Ordonez did.</div>

Before we had Bowman Chrome, we had Bowman's Best. I was a sucker for the chrome cards and outside a few comic book promo cards I had from bagged copies of Wizard magazine, I didn't have many premium cards like this. When I finally landed this RC I was one happy collector. Seems so tame when compared to today's cards.</div>

<i>1995 Bowman RC #140</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was my first official rookie card of Ordonez. I didn't have many options in my area when this card was new to buy packs, especially the more hobby oriented releases such as Bowman. I do remember oddly enough buying several packs of 1995 Bowman from a pet store of all places while on the way down to Oak Island, NC one summer as part of a youth retreat with my church. For all I know, the very card in I have in my collection may have been pulled from one of those packs.<br />
<br />
I really enjoyed the 1995 Bowman design and ended buying a good bit of it (when I could find packs) as not only was I chasing this card, but also of Andruw Jones and Vladimir Guerrero.</div>

My first real exposure to Upper Deck was with their 1991 set, so by the time this 1995 rolled around I was really impressed. This minor league set borrows the same full bleed photo design as major league set of the same year. Looking back at old Upper Deck cards makes me really miss their take on baseball cards.</div>

Parallels were really starting to pop up everywhere in the mid-90's and this set was no different. Each card had a simple parallel called Future Stock. You can see the silver stamp there in the upper corner.</div>

I was a big fan of Fleer in the 90's, but this Excel set never excited me as much as other minor league sets. The design is horrible. You can tell this is a great action shot of Ordonez at second base, but the sliding player is cropped out and there is no background. </div>

There weren't many inserts in this Excel set and that may be a good thing based off this one insert's design. Had they not screwed with the photo and just had a clean design it may have come off as a better looking card.</div>

One of the first minor league cards of Ordonez that I originally picked up off eBay. I opened a lot of this product when it was new. I guess I was "speculating" that some of the young stars featured in the set would make it worth while. I particularly remember going for Alex Rodriguez's card and his Cream of the Crop insert. No telling how many of this particular card of Ordonez I actually had back then.</div>
